Friedhelm Leonhard Althaus

Friedhelm “Fred” Althaus passed away peacefully at home on 18 April, 2024, in Hicksville, New York at the age of 87.

Devoted Husband of the late Ruth Althaus (Kienast) married 56 years. Loving Father of Vera and Richard. Treasured Opa (Grandfather) of Luke (Eden Smitelli), Beloved Ur-Opa (Great-Grandfather) of Lillian and Adeline.

Fred was born on 5 October 1936, in Essen Germany to Robert and Gertrude. He graduated from Technical High School where he studied mechanics, metalworking and welding. He went to work for Siemens as a Monteur (Fitter). This gave him the opportunity to work aboard for a year in Durgapur India. Shortly upon his return back to Germany he set sail to America, aboard the S.S. ‘Hanseatic’.

Fred had a forty-seven-year career in the automotive field. Upon retirement, he was an active “Fix it Fred” type of guy. Helping out family and friends wherever he was needed. Fred enjoyed spending time with his great-grandchildren.

Devoted Golfer, Formular 1 enthusiast, Soccer and NY Islanders fan.

Memorial service will be held on Friday, April 26th, from 2pm – 6pm at Thomas F. Dalton Funeral Home in Hicksville, Long Island.
